Obituary for Bill Vine

Bill Vine
Elmer Thomas 'Bill' Vine ~ formerly of Listowel, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 11, 2015 with family by his side at Grey Bruce Hospice Owen Sound. He was 96.

Beloved husband of Alice (Annett) Vine for 58 years. Dear father of Paul Vine (Helen King) Owen Sound, and Kathryn Vine-Smith (Derrick Smith) Guelph. He was predeceased by son Richard John in infancy, and brothers Jack and Gordon, and sister Velma Sleightholm.

He was born September 9th, 1918 in Elma Township, son of the late Elva and Annie (Clyde) Vine.

Bill, along with his father Elva and brother Gordon were prominent purebred Holstein dairy farmers in the Listowel area. Vinedale Farms won the Master Breeder Award in 1954 and many accolades at local and major shows in Canada and the U.S. The Vinedale name is referenced several times in Edward Morwick’s books The Chosen Breed Vol. l and ll: reflecting the stories and history of Holstein cattle in Canada.

Bill was an avid hockey enthusiast and played forward with the Trowbridge Trojans for many years. The Trojans won the WOAA Intermediate Championship in 1954.

He and his family moved to Listowel after selling the farm in 1976. To keep active Bill became a security guard for 13 years, first at the Campbell Soup Company and then Spinrite Yarns. He enjoyed the routine and social aspect of the job.

In retirement Bill dabbled in wood working and made many beautiful purple martin bird houses. He spent hours honing his pool playing skills and loved to challenge visitors to a friendly game.

Bill always maintained his sense of humour no matter the situation. He appreciated his friends and neighbours and everything they did for him and Alice. He was a member and supporter of the United Church for 58 years.

Visitation will be at the Eaton Funeral Home, Listowel on February 21st from 12:00 pm until the time of the funeral service at 1:00. Rev. George Russell will officiate.

Interment at Elma Centre Cemetery.
