Obituary for Edgar Ott

Edgar Ott
Edgar Ott ~ surrounded by the love of his family, Edgar Charles Ott, passed away peacefully at Palmerston Hospital on Sunday, May 18, 2014. The former Listowel resident, now living in Caressant Care Harriston with his wife of 70 years, had celebrated his 90th birthday on Feb. 21, 2014.

Edgar was born and raised on the fourth of Wallace, the beloved youngest child of the late George and Alvena (Timm) Ott. As a young man he loved nothing more than to spend his time on a dance floor, where his grace was noticed by many, including a young woman who spied him at her sister's post-wedding party. The former Phyllis Matthews was smitten with the handsome wavy-haired youth, he with the pretty brunette who had her eye on him. Following a two-year courtship, they married on Dec. 30, 1943.

With his solid country upbringing, Edgar also understood the value of hard work. As a co-owner of G&E Auto Body in Listowel, for many years he spent long days and weeks building a business that would support his family, which now included children, Marj, Bob and Bonnie.

With so many hours dedicated to work, it was little wonder that Edgar and Phyllis looked forward to Saturday nights, when they attended Parkview Gardens for an evening of dancing with friends. While Phyllis often said that women lined up for their turn to glide across the floor with Edgar, the first, middle and last dance of the night he always saved for his sweetheart.

In spring of 1972, the couple began spending their free time at a trailer in Port Elgin, where a new group of friends was added to their social circle. Having been fortunate enough to retire at a relatively young age, Edgar and Phyllis whiled away many enjoyable summers there. Edgar took up golfing and spent pleasant hours on the links with his son and grandsons.

Edgar was also a man of faith and dedicated many years of service to St. Paul's Lutheran Church as Sunday School superintendent, a member of the choir and on the board.

Mourning his loss most deeply are Edgar's wife, Phyllis and his children Marjorie and James Moore of Barrie, Robert and Patricia Ott of Milton and Bonnie and Mark Gropp of Brussels.

Edgar was the dearly-loved grandfather of Brad and Karey Moore, Ancaster; Scott and Laurie Moore, Flesherton; Matthew and Amanda Ott and Andrew Ott, all of Milton; Jason and Lisa Gropp, Kitchener; Nicki and Francois Risdon, Dundas; Ashley and Dylan Flach, Stratford and Joshua Gropp and Rebecca Siegner, London.

He was also the proud great-grandpa of 15: Lauren, Kendra, Avery, Noah, Maeve, Spencer, Lyla, Liam, Adelaide, Mitchell, Wilhelm (born on his Edgar's 90th birthday), Darian, DJ, Rodney and Arjay.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 21st at St. Paul's Lutheran Church.

Pallbearers were Edgar's grandsons while his two granddaughters carried floral tributes. Pastor Ralph Dwarika officated.

Interment followed at Fairview Cemetery, Listowel.

Memorial donations to St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Listowel, Lung Association, or charity of choice would be appreciated, and may be made through the Eaton Funeral Home, Listowel.
